Dr.
Gurney is a widely-recognized authority on human neurodegenerative
diseases and his research focuses on elucidating the molecular basis
of disorders such as Lou Gehrig’s disease and Alzheimer’s Disease.
Prior to his present appointment at Pharmacia Upjohn, Dr. Gurney held
faculty positions at University of Chicago and Northwestern
University. In 1994, Dr. Gurney helped develop one of the first
transgenic animal models for human neurodegenerative diseases, a mouse
model of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in which the enzyme superoxide
dismutase (SOD) was altered. In
1999, Dr. Gurney and his associates identified a protein that may play
a role in the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
